A brief history of the Okpe people of Niger-Delta

By Tega Ezekiel Ughara

kingdom of Okpe, the largest monolithic Kingdom in Delta… Prince Igboze is the founding father of the royal family of the Okpe people. He was the son of an Oba (king) of Benin Empire. In the middle of the seventeenth century, he noticed the decline of the power of the Empire and, fearing for its future, determined to found his own kingdom. For this purpose he obtained his title of Ovie (king) from his second cousin, Oba Ahenzae of Benin, who was then on the throne, 1640 AD – 1661 AD. He left Benin Empire in the middle of the seventeenth century with his wives, family, and a number of followers (slaves) and set out southwards from Benin. It was an Israelite journey, he voyaged through modern day Auchi, Akoko-Edo, there are Okpes in Akoko-Edo till date (they were known to be the food basket of Edo then), he further located Patani through the river Niger and finally arrived at his new territory of Orere-Olomu. After a decade or so, when Igboze’s new kingdom was well established, he was later visited by an Igbo named Olomu. Olomu lived with Igboze for a long time and succeeded in winning the confidence of Igboze to such an extent that Igboze declared him his heir. Igboze, who had obtained the royal title of Ovie (king) to rule his new territory, was at the height of his power when he died. Upon Igboze’s death, Olomu took the title of Ovie. This caused a rift, because Igboze’s son, Okpe, quarreled with Olomu about who should succeed as king (Bradbury, 1957, p. 131; Hubbard, 1948, pp. 237-8; Asagba, 2005, p. 7). Okpe and his followers later left the territory and settled in the Agbarho quarters of the Isoko Okpe. Okpe lived and died in Isoko Okpe. Before his death, Okpe had four sons: Orhue, Orhoro, Evwreke, and Esezi. The descendants of those four sons are the royal members of the Urhobo Kingdom of Okpe (Otite, 1973 and Asagba, 2005). Since 1770 – 1779 AD till date the Kings are called Orodje. It is one of the many kingdoms that make up Urhobo tribe. Its capital is Orerokpe.

The kingdom plays host to the Warri Airport, which is actually located at Osubi and the Delta State Trade Fair Complex. The Okpe people are known to have migrated to found the present day Sapele and the Orodje of Okpe still exercises authority over the land of Sapele. Common language, Okpe.

The illustrious kingdom of Okpe as history recalls had four sons: Orhue, Orhoro, Evwreke and Esezi. These four Okpe ruling houses later decided to adopt a rotational system to produce a ruler for the kingdom. This has helped to stabilize peace and social equality in the kingdom till date.

The first king produced by this system was H.R.M. Esezi I, Orodje of Okpe whose sovereignty was around the period of 1770-1779. H.R.M.

H.R.M. Esezi II, became the second Orodje of Okpe. A visionary and highly idealistic monarch who believed in the system of democracy. As a pioneer advocate of democracy in the land of okpe, he also was pivotal to Nigeria. He was amongst delegates of kings that attended the 1957 Lyttelton Conference held in London in order to seek the Nigerian independence from the indirect government of the colonial master. He ruled the kingdom around the period of 1945-1966.

H.R.M. Orhoro I, the third Orodje of Okpe ruled the kingdom from around the period of 1972-2004. He was educated at a Catholic school and also served in the Nigeria police force. He later earned a Business Administration Diploma in the United Kingdom. His early life experience served him well as a springboard for establishing and becoming a director of a company, the New Africa Industries Limited. He was a worthy and peace-loving monarch that held several other public posts.

H.R.M. Orhue I, Orodje of Okpe is the fourth and current king of Okpe. He is a worthy monarch that served his nation as a high-ranking major general in the Nigerian Army. There is great expectations of the greatness his monarchy will add to the already illustrious history of the kingdom of Okpe…

Nawa ooo! Sapele Tafia, you dey write rubbish sha, I hope you dey hear from your ancestors?

Mr. Busybody (Sapele Tafia), is it a crime for a Member of the Delta State House of Assembly to have a meeting with the Governor, why not mind your business or are you a member of PDP? And what do you stand to gain by always misleading the public with wrong informations.

Yes, Hon. (Hi-Chief) Felix Uruemuesiri ANIRAH, Chairman, House Committee on Local Govt. and Chieftaincy Affairs, DTHA, had a meeting with the Governor this weekend, the outcome of the meeting has nothing to do with you, so mind your business.

It was a closed door meeting between Hon. (Hi-Chief) F.U. ANIRAH and H.E. Sen. (Dr.) Ifeanyi A. OKOWA, there was no third party, non of the Governor’s aide or Okakuro ANIRAH’S aide were allowed in and the outcome of the meeting has not been disclosed.

So I wander why you are busy telling the public that OKOWA and ANIRAH had talked over the PDP State Chairman position zoned to Sapele LGA and that the Udukpoin of Okpe Kingdom (Okakuro F.U. ANIRAH) have seen reasons to bow out of the fight, that you wander why he doesn’t want to tell his supporters that he has bowed out of the struggle.

For your information Mr. Busybody (Sapele Tafia), I which to reiterate that an official meeting between the Governor and the Honourable Member of the DTHA is not meant for the public. If the Governor wants to disclose the outcome of such meeting, he will do so through his capable Media Crew. So the information by Sapele Voice is falsehood.

Anyway, I am not surprised because Sapele Voice (Sapele Tafia) is known to be very mischievous.

Finally, the public should please discountenance Mr. Sapele Tafia’s rumoured information, it is unfounded.

God bless PDP Delta State!
God bless the Leaders of PDP Delta Central!!
God bless Sapele State Constituency!!!

ANIRAH TO DELTANS AND PDP: THERE’S NO CRISIS IN SAPELE

• Says Hon Godwin Atose wasn’t a hand-picked candidate; but the unanimous decisions of the Party Leaders as the only candidate who indicated interest.

• Reiterates he is not oppressing Esiso as insinuated; he caused himself to fall out of favour

By: Ezealaji chukwuebuka

The member representing Sapele State Constituency, at the 7th Delta State House of Assembly, Chief (Hon.) Felix Uruemuesiri Anirah has made a call during an open conversation with friends, supporters and co- lawmakers to debunk every insinuations that Barr. Kingsley Esiso was being oppressed by him, all in the tone of tribal sentiments.

In his expression “I am not against anyone, tribe or group of persons as the case maybe”. If we look at it critically, I am rather the one being underestimated and victimized, right from the period of pre-primary elections till date. I beared and swallowed alot of insults from projected persons who are not my contemporary in politics, which any potential and successful politician must do anyways, all to give peace a chance and by the grace of Almighty God, I have been growing stronger.

He noted that H.E. Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, the Executive Governor of Delta state who is not only a trustworthy fellow, he’s also a God fearing and law abiding man who will stand by the truth. His shining example, when he conducted the PDP National convention in the year 2018 in Port Harcourt, which was rated the best in the country today. He further said “it’s in my nature to do what seems right before God and not before men, so people shouldn’t have hard feelings whenever I’m not easily compromised for what is not just”.

” It is quite ridiculous for me to be reported to our Party PDP faithfuls and Deltans at large, of being oppressive by carrying out my functions as directed by the Delta Central PDP Caucus/Leaders in relation to the State PDP Chairmanship position which was duely zoned to Sapele LGA by the Delta Central Leaders”.

To set the records straight he said, “I did not impose Hon. Godwin Atose as the candidate, I called a meeting of all Leaders/stakeholders in Sapele LGA at Chief (Mrs) Margaret Unukegwo’s residence via text messages, and the Agenda of the meeting was duly stated in the message”. He, “Kingsley Esiso” refused to attend the said meeting, he went ahead and told the leaders that the position has been zoned to him by the Governor, and that the only form for the position of PDP Chairman was with him. Godwin Atose was the only candidate who indicated interest, and the entirety of the leaders unanimously supported him, his name was sent back to the Delta Central Leaders through Chief (Sen.) Ighoyota Amori who is the cordinating officer just as every other LGAs in the Delta Central did, so where does my sins lie? “He asked”.

He concluded by saying that every issues with regards to the State PDP Chairmanship position is no longer within his reach, since he has carried out his own function as directed by the Party Caucus/Leaders of the Delta Central justly. He also used the medium to appeal to the various tribes which make up Sapele PDP and PDP faithfuls Statewide, to dismiss every allegations of being oppressive and tribal as he will continue to do anything humanly possible to unite and strengthen the bonds of love and good relationship which we have all continually enjoyed in the realm of polity and beyond.

RE: PDP STATE CHAIRMANSHIP SWING: FEAR AN ACCLAIMED WINNER OF AN ELECTION ANY DAY ANY… TIME THAT SAYS NOTHING, BY INARTICULATE OMENE ONOKURHEFE PRECIOUS SUNDAY, THE RIDICULOUS WRITER

Nawa ooo! Omene Onokurhefe Precious Sunday, you dey write fire sha, I hope you dey hear from your ancestors?

Aliko Dangote is ranked by Forbes magazine as the 88th richest person in the world, the richest black person in the world and the richest in Africa, with an estimated net worth of USD$8.1 billion (March 2020) and recently named among top 100 powerful people in the world.

There are over Twenty (20) companies owned by Aliko Dangote across Africa and Asia.

The Dangote Group is a diversified conglomerate, headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria, with interests across a range of sectors in Africa and part of Asia. Current interests include cement, sugar, flour, salt, pasta, beverages and real estate, with new projects in development in the oil and Natural gas, telecommunications, fertilizer and steel.

The Group focuses on provision of local, value-added products and services that meet the needs of the African population and part of Asia, etc.

Dangote Cement, the largest cement production company in Africa, with a market capitalization of almost US$14 billion on the Nigeria Stock Exchange, has subsidiaries in Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, with factories that will soon kickoff in Ethiopia, Nepal in Asia etc.

In spite of Alhaji Aliko Dangote (MFR, GCON) contributions to the development of these African countries (Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, South Africa, Zambia, Ethiopia, Nepal, etc) do you think the Aborigines there will allow him to be their president? The public should be the judge.

Omene Onokurhefe Precious Sunday, the Omenes we know are sensible writers, but I am so amazed at your writeup.

Below is a powerful writeup by your younger brother Mr. John Omene, a PDP stalwart, Ethiope West LGA, addressing Princewill Ejogharado

Princewill Ejogharado, Frankly, this whole scenario between Esiso on one hand and Anirah and co on the other hand can be love liken to the situation between the Southern/Northern Nigeria. The Southerners wants to leave on their own but the Northerners say “No” we must be together because of the discovery of oil in the south. The indigenous people of Sapele say “No” you are not from here , you dey force yourself on them. Okey, let the Sapele Okpe people just adopt Esiso as a child of necessity.
I am an Oghara man from Ethiope West Local Govt Area , there is one man in Oghara who have been enjoying choice appointment from Chief Ibori time till date but during Uduaghan 2nd term the man said he wants to contest for House of Assembly, do you know that the day his post came out, that was the day Oghara people called him and told him if he had forgotten that his father was buried at Jesse . The man did not say heaven will fall but he immediately withdrawn to save his face and integrity.
Again, it is a serious mistake to give adolescent the opposite impression.
It is always a serious monumental mistake to engage a whole community in a political struggle that can consume you.
History has it that political struggle are never won on the pages of Newspaper or Media. Rather most political solution are sorted out by night.
Read John 3:1-8 Nicodemus made appointment to see Jesus at Night for fear of the Pharisees. Nicodemus a top Jewish council member throw away Pride and put on the germent of humility.
Esiso could have been able to settle this whole issue before now but he allowed pride to take over his sense of humility. Funny enough, the Chief Anirah side has 5 joker which they have not release but one of the joker is that during the last Governorship/House of Assembly and the Presidential/National Assembly elections respectively there is a video to show where Esiso cast his vote and some sycophants are just talking and writing nonsense especially the last article, the writer was just talking about history like a man who does not know that what people wants to hear is judgemental fact not issues concerning – Nigeria Civil war, AT&P, Mukoro Mowoe and Salubi . The writer went further to confused himself by bring Chief Ibru and Chief Ibori to x- ray, As if he was drunk he tried to confused himself that Esiso emergency for the first term was by election.
We have to be very careful so that we don’t make the same mistake made in Zamfara and Rivers.
